Out of season, the castle has a more serene, sometimes nostalgic atmosphere, it is both imposing and enchanting, always mysterious and romantic!

At your own pace, you can discover this exceptional site for an independent visit.

By appointment, guided tours can be arranged, even during the week, for groups of 4 or more people.

To liven up your visit, you can find a crackling fire in the hearth of a fireplace, a refined tea on our menu, or another hot or cold drink which can be served to you accompanied by a delicious cake (François, master pastry chef at Bergerac), at your request, in the Salon des Thés or in the sun, on the terraces.

The Château team looks forward to welcoming you and is committed to making your visit pleasant.

Chateau-Rochechouart

Estimated Drive Time :

1hr 46min

The first Rochechouart castle was very different from the one we see today. The site on which it was established, “la Rocca de Cavardus”, is the origin of the name of the town and the family of viscounts of Rochechouart; little is known about this primitive castle.

The buildings visible today, for the most part, date from the 15th century with the interior courtyard and its elegant Renaissance gallery. The oldest part, including the entrance gate and the keep, dates back to the 13th century .

During the Revolution, the castle was pillaged, the remaining furniture and the archives dispersed. However, the Rochechouart family, to whom the castle was returned after the Revolution, chose to sell it in 1836 to the Department of Haute-Vienne. The building was then the subject of several restoration and rehabilitation campaigns as it was used administratively (town hall, court, sub-prefecture, dispensary, gendarmerie, etc.).

In 1985, the Department founded the Rochechouart Departmental Museum of Contemporary Art within the castle and offered the public the opportunity to permanently visit a first-rate heritage building.

Embellished in particular by the addition in the 19th century of a French garden and a landscaped park, it is a unique site in Périgord which combines the splendor of nature and the majesty of architecture, with a culture of refinement inherited and transmitted over time. This place steeped in history, preserved and restored by its various owners for over a millennium, can still be visited today. It is the fruit of a family's strong commitment to a value: beauty.
