Culminating at 731 meters above sea level, Mont Gargan, located on the south-eastern edge of Haute-Vienne, is a heritage site and an emblematic landscape of Limousin.

From its summit, visitors access an exceptional 360° panorama of the Millevaches plateau, the Monédières massif and all of the Limousin plateaus up to the Monts d'Auvergne.

The park territory is rich in exceptional natural and cultural heritage.

Medieval castles, manors and abbeys; the hilly landscape is dotted with these limestone and granite monuments which have stood the test of time. In the hollows of the valleys, a more recent heritage, from the beginnings of industry, recalls the important presence of water, by the force of which the machines of the forges, spinning mills and other factories ran...

The historical riches of the park are enveloped in a green setting. Deciduous forests mingle with meadows where limousines peacefully graze. The park is also home to diverse fauna and flora, with rare and protected species, such as the Yellow-bellied Ringer or the Fritillary Guinea Fowl.

Going for a hike in Limousin means rubbing shoulders with deer and fairies, along ageless megaliths, along mossy paths with stacked stone walls. It's meeting the local people and admiring their granite houses. The valleys, puys or juices define a relief unchanged for centuries. With its 46 hectares, the large island of Chaillac-sur-Vienne (sometimes called “Ile de Navière”, after the name of its former owners) is the largest of all the islands of Vienne and the only important one in Limousin. The island has been open to the public since the Community of Communes owned it. 

From a hiking trail, you can go around the island and discover the richness of its flora as well as the large paddle wheel which supplies the island with water.

Claude Monet, Armand Guillaumin, Francis Picabia all passed here, at the confluence of the Creuse and the Sédelle. They all got lost in these rocky landscapes, covered in heather and broom, and bathed in light. Easel under their arm and hat on their head, they all came to capture this wild nature armed with their brushes or pencils. Here is the valley of painters, a land located along the Creuse whose emblem – the ancient fortress of Crozant – seems to be waiting to be sketched. Come on, I'm taking you to lost lands that are yet so beautiful.

The meteorite circuit invites you to discover the village of Babaudus, the body of water and the town of Rochechouart. Many panoramas. Visit the castle, the contemporary art museum and the meteorite space. Two variations are possible to shorten the hike.

An extraordinary event in the history of the planet occurred in the region of Rochechouart, Chassenon... 200 million years ago. An asteroid one and a half kilometers in diameter ended its journey there at 72,000 km/h.

The Paul Pellas Meteorite Space is a permanent exhibition space, with animation offerings developed around numerous themes: the solar system, meteorites, the effects and consequences of the falls of these objects, global impact craters , the French crater the Astrobleme of Rochechouart-Chassenon.

Over approximately 150 m², samples of rocks and meteorites, educational panels, models, computer terminals and video projections help you better understand the subjects and when you leave, you can stop by a small shop.

An exceptional work of art from the 12th century measuring 1.5 km, sometimes dug into the rock, sometimes built in corbels by the Cistercian monks of the abbey, the monks' canal runs along the side of the rock from its water intake on the stream of Coyroux. It served fishponds and mills and brought running water to the monastery.

Several possibilities for walks: round trip along the Canal (1h30) or hiking loops (3h). Departure for walks near the wash house at Route de Tulle.

Warning: site prohibited for animals, bicycles, motorcycles and strollers.

Site not accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Walking shoes recommended.
