The only commune in the Haute-Vienne department classified as “One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France”, rich in the vestiges of its glorious past, presents an imposing architectural ensemble, with great purity of lines. The town of Mortemart is built around a castle that Abon Drut, Lord of Mortemart, was authorized to build in 995 after having victoriously defended the City of Bellac against Count William of Poitiers. In 1330, Cardinal Pierre Gauvain, a native of Mortemart, founded three convents, including the Hôtel-Dieu with a monumental staircase dating from the 17th century, but also a college, whose old chapel became the parish church which houses very beautiful carved stalls from the 15th century, as well as an altarpiece, paintings on wood and a gilded wooden lectern from the 17th century.

The history of La Roque-Gageac is closely linked to its location in the heart of the Dordogne valley and close to the Roman road which linked Limoges to Cahors. In the 19th century, several archaeological discoveries attest to human occupation from the Roman period in Saint-Donat. This is where the seat of the parish was located in the Middle Ages, whose church was destroyed during the Wars of Religion at the end of the 16th century.

Impossible to explore the Dordogne Valley without visiting Rocamadour, one of the “  Most Beautiful Villages in France” . » Located in the Lot department, this emblematic site stands vertically and majestically, with its castle, which overlooks the different levels clinging to the cliff between the Alzou stream and the Causse de Gramat. “The houses on the stream, the churches on the houses, the rocks on the churches, the castle on the rocks. » The surroundings of the village also offer their share of treasures with the Causse and the valleys of Alzou and Ouysse. Turenne does not lack panache with the slender silhouette of its limestone keep, an avalanche of slate roofs and bold turrets. We are amazed by the richness of the heritage: the church and its gilded wooden altarpiece, the private mansions from the 16th and 17th centuries, to be admired by following the signposted route so as not to miss any of them. And of course the castle, or rather its imposing ruins: the ramparts, the 13th century keep and the Caesar Tower. From above, the panorama is unforgettable!
